Placenta Services Description
LBee Birth Services is dedicated to giving each placenta the respect and honor it so deserves by offering prints, encapsulation, tinctures and salves. I use a professional dehydrator with adjustable temperature settings (not an oven), sterilize and/or dispose of tools between each processing, and continuously further my education as a member of several national and international groups dedicated to the research of placentas. Placenta encapsulation is the process of preparing the mother’s placenta after the birth of her baby by dehydrating, powdering and placing it into capsules for the mother to use as she sees fit. Where possible the umbilical cord is also dried and provided separately as a keepsake.
It is your responsibility to notify me after the birth (ideally within 24 hours) to make arrangements for pick up, or drop off. Failure to do so may result in delayed placenta preparation/encapsulation and may render it unusable.
It is your responsibility to discuss release of your placenta with your midwife or doctor and from the hospital where you give birth (or backup hospital for home births). Please ensure proper labeling and storage of your placenta in a refrigerator or cooler with the placenta placed on ice until it can be picked up or delivered for preparation and encapsulation.
Your placenta should not be treated with alcohol, formalin, or any other preservative.
Packaging and Transportation
Whether birthing at home or in a hospital, please ensure that your placenta is kept fresh. It can remain at room temperature for 3-4 hours following the birth. After that it should be refrigerated or otherwise kept cool.
If you are practicing some form of delayed cord cutting or lotus birth, ice packs may be wrapped up with the placenta to prevent spoilage or salt applied. If it is going to be more than 4 or 5 days before the placenta can be prepared, it should be frozen. (A frozen placenta will take somewhat longer to prepare since I prefer to gently defrost it prior to preparation.)
It is important to note that there may be circumstances under which your placenta can not be used. Significant abnormalities of the placenta may necessitate your doctor or midwife sending your placenta to Pathology for further examination. Other conditions, such as signs of infection in the mother during labor, may mean that consuming your placenta will not be beneficial to you. If in doubt, I will consult with you before proceeding. It should be possible to claim your placenta after Caesarean surgery. If you are not able to obtain and use your placenta for any reason, I will return your deposit and provide you with some other ideas to support your postpartum recovery.
Please let me know if you have any health concerns which may affect the health of your placenta or the health and safety of anyone who may come into contact with your placenta.
Thank you for understanding that I am also a midwifery assistant and birth doula. In the event that I am called to a birth, there may be a delay of 24 hours or more in preparing your placenta.
There are two main methods of encapsulation preparation.
In the Traditional method the placenta is gently steamed before dehydration. Herbs are not included in the capsules.
The Raw method involves dehydrating the raw placenta. Please allow extra time for this preparation method.
Please check the method you would like to utilize:
My encapsulation package includes, when possible, the dried umbilical cord as a keepsake and photos of the placenta(s). Also, when I process a placenta, a traditional painted print is not an option, but I still wanted families to have access to an artistic memory of their child's placenta...so I decided to utilize my graphics and art degree by making digital renderings available for an additional fee. You can view samples of this work here.
If you are only interested in placenta prints, I do offer as a stand alone service. Painted, blood and digital prints are available.
A tincture is made by soaking a small piece of fresh placenta in strong alcohol; it may be used after your capsules are gone by placing drops in a glass of water, similar to an herbal tincture.
A natural and healing salve is created by combining nourishing oils with dehydrated placenta powder.
Please check the box of each component you would like. If you leave any box unchecked I will take that to mean that you *do not want* that service.
In the event your placenta is unavailable to you (eg sent to Pathology and not released) or if you change your mind and choose to terminate this contract prior to releasing your placenta to me, any fees paid including the deposit will be refunded in full.
If you choose to terminate this contract after releasing your placenta to me but before any preparation has begun, I will return your placenta to you for disposal. Your deposit will be retained, but any other portion of the fee you may have paid will be returned.
There will be no refund and payment will be due in full once preparation has begun, even if you choose not to take delivery of the finished capsules.
